1000’s of us blog every day but do we fully understand how to optimize a blog post ?
You may well compile high quality content in your blog’s however if our blog optimization is not up to the standard of the SEO consultants you may not find your content achieving a high search engine ranking. There are a number of quite technical methods SEO consultants use to optimize blogs. In this blog I will cover some of the basic methods of how to optimize a blog post, and also point you in the right direction if you want to further your knowledge and enhance your learning to new levels. Before I started my online business I thought SEO and blog post optimization was all to do with bidding on a popular keyword. But now I’ve learned a bit about how to optimize a blog post I know keywords are important but in a slightly different way!
How to Optimize a Blog using KEYWORDS
Keywords are vital to optimize your blog posts. Before even writing a blog it is a good idea to do some keyword research. Some people use Google’s Keyword Planner to
find the highest bid priced keywords and find out which keywords are the most/least popular about a topic they wish to blog about. Generally speaking however the shorter the keyword tail, the more frequently searched it will be and the higher the competition will be for it. This is because shorter keywords tend to be more general, whereas long-tail keywords tend to be more specific. Therefore if you choose long-tail keywords your audience is searching for something more specific to their needs therefore your blog is more likely to help them, get clicked and be less in demand.
There are other keyword search tools available like Moz and Wordtracker . Or alternatively you can do your Keyword Research manually. You can think of a topic you would like to blog about, for example “how to optimize a blog post” and tabulate a list of up to 100 related key words for further research. When you have a list of key words, pick one you would like to target, go to google and WITHIN INVERTED COMMAS input the keyword (exact match). As you can see in the image about 14,400 search results for this key word. You ideally want to have less than 30,000 results for your keywords. If your keyword is too long tailed it may yield too few searches and also not be suitable For example I wouldn’t personally use a keyword chain with less than 5,000 because I feel its unlikely to be clicked. But some Online Marketers would blog with a keyword tail that only has a literally a few results in google because it is relatively easy to get a high rank even though very few people search for the keyword.
If your keyword shows 1-2-300,000+ it is probably a short-tail keyword and not the best one to use for your blog. You can clearly see in the next image how using a short-tail keyword can yield too many results to make a high search engine ranking feasible for you. With 29,500,000 websites using that keyword there is clearly a lot of competition for it and it will be extremely difficult to reach a high ranking. So far in my blog I have gone into a fair amount of detail about keywords, however there are many other ways of how to optimize a blog post. I will briefly cover these off now and also point you in the right direction to find a MUCH more detailed and educational insight into blogging and online marketing as a whole. This would really get your content out there to the masses and generate leads and sales for your business online.
Further ways of how to optimize a blog post would be:
- Place links on your blog post to other blog posts in your website OR other sources of content
- Make sure you put your main/target keyword into your URL for the blog post itself.
- Use your main/target keyword in your blog post and also try to use it in headings too.
- Use images and optimize those as well by using your main keyword in the alt text.
There is a lot more detail to optimizing a blog post and if I covered all of it fully it would mean this blog went on forever or if not bordering on war and peace.
